The Unclassified Get Smart Site

Once upon a blustery night in early January, the staff of the N-D bid a fond farewell to sports editor Justin Breen. After years of toiling and slaving for the N-D Justin decided to move to a B-I-G paper. In honor of Mr. Breen's fine service we saluted him in his favorite bar -Ye Olde Benny's. The following is a pictorial account of what transpired that evening. Don't get scared, now....

The Culprits

At left we have the N-D Sports Department as of Jan 3, 2004. At right, is the out-going sports editor and the resident business reporter trying to keep each other from falling over.

Bag Pipes!

Entertainment for the evening (and morning) was provided by pro-am bag piper and N-D photographer Steve Peterka. The above pics speak for themselves.

The Statue of Liberty

Justin11.jpg (34231 bytes)   Justin9.jpg (34054 bytes)   Parky gone wild!

In the stunts portion of the party, the Sports Department graced the bar with the Statue of Liberty. This bizarre act of I-don't-know-what involves sticking one's index and middle finger in a shot of whiskey while someone lights their digits with a lighter. The end result of this backwards and savage ritual is a glowing hand resembling Lady Liberty's torch. In the first pic, take note of the blue hue around Justin's fingers. Brendan and Parky, however, had extinguished their torches before we could capture their fingers on film.

* No fingers were burnt in this stunt and for the record, Mr. Breen did protest doing a Statue of Liberty, stating he had nearly burnt his fingers the last time he did this ;-)

Plain out drunkenness

  Justin2.jpg (20922 bytes)   Justin1.jpg (30080 bytes)   Justin3.jpg (32131 bytes)

The above pics are all about the toll an evening of partying took on the group. In the first picture the webmaster is struggling to stay awake. Next, Justin appears to be accusing Lifestyle editor Sue of something. Huh??? Finally we have a nice shot of shiny happy people.

The fine photos on this page and the graphic at the top of the page were brought to you by this esteemed photojournalist -Mr. Tony Bayer (who is also the webmaster's husband).
